With its intriguing antique shops and arcades and its picturesque canal, it is worth making an afternoon of a trip to Hungerford. And if you are looking for somewhere to enjoy a relaxing lunch or evening, there is no better place in town than The Downgate - and nothing so pleasing on the eye.

Bought by Arkell's in 1994, this pretty pub has been recently restored to what you see here.

    - pub food
    - dog friendly with Hungerford common ideal for walks
    - award-winning real ales
    - hidden courtyard

The Downgate is one of Arkell's pubs for all seasons - as warm and cosy in the wintertime as it is bright and fresh in the summer, but don't take our word for it. The pub is regularly listed in CAMRA's Good Beer Guide, which describes The Downgate as follows:

"Quiet pub on the edge of Hungerford Common, with a friendly village inn atmosphere. A small, intimate dining area is a few steps down from the bar... Pleasant summer drinking."

    Enough said.

"Being a Licensee is a fine and rewarding job", says Chris, and it helps that the Arkell’s directors are approachable. "We had a lot of help and they provide us with regular information, but ultimately it's up to us."

Chris Manners is the Licensee of three Arkell’s pubs. The Rusty Bicycle, The Rickety Press and The Bottle of Sauce
