The George has a very special place among all the pubs owned by Arkell's Brewery. The village was the birthplace of John Arkell back in 1802 and you will find generations of his ancestors buried here. It was hardly surprising that he returned here in 1861 to purchase his third pub, a building he must have been familiar with when he was growing up.

    - beautiful country setting
    - excellent pub food and Sunday lunch
    - pub garden

The George must have been a beautiful pub then because it certainly is now.

Unusually standing at right angles to the road, you could be excused for thinking The George is a modest, unassuming pub in what is still a sleepy village.

It soon becomes apparent, however, that the place is brimming over with character whether you choose the more informal public bar or the plush, warm lounge. Either will bring you into contact with the friendly staff who made an impression on assessors for The Good Pub Guide, where The George is inevitably listed.

"Being a Licensee is a fine and rewarding job", says Chris, and it helps that the Arkell’s directors are approachable. "We had a lot of help and they provide us with regular information, but ultimately it's up to us."

Chris Manners is the Licensee of three Arkell’s pubs. The Rusty Bicycle, The Rickety Press and The Bottle of Sauce
